RIP Chris Thatcher

His name should have been "Chris Thrasher". My friend is gone. I just found out from my friend Guy T. on Facebook that "Thatch" died a month ago. I am really hurt that his life ended so quickly. I have known Chris for about 6 years. Guy T. introduced us at Guy's indoor skateboard park. We clicked right off. We both had love for skateboarding, punk and being smartasses. We had good times. I know that for a year we skated damn near everyday...that's 360ish days I spent with him for many hours on end. It was not just him and I....but we had our own small click. Chris was very talented. I am talking about a person who was an artist, skateboarder/thrasher, friend and so much more. Chris' work can be found on the bottom of skateboard decks, t-shirts, in art galleries, magazines etc.. He wasn't a small time wannabee. I feel lucky to have known him. Thatch was one of the last hardcore punk skaters out there and what he represented is exactly what I lived in my day. AMT Double Dragster

There is a lot of hooplah over the new release by Round2. The kit is being issued in two fashions and has created a lot of chit chat on the messages boards.
One is issued in a tin box with the silent box art and the other is in a cardboard box. The difference in the two kits that stands out the most are as follows..
The "tin boxed" kit has all the goodies. The tin box version has a small poster that features all panels of the box art, 3 sets of windows-one is green tinted, red tinted and clear, 2 pairs of Racemaster slicks-one pair has a whitewall and the other has the lettering only(lettering is pad printed white), an extra chrome tree and two decal sheet/versions from two previous releases.
I don't know if both cardboard and tin boxed kits have the same decals. The cardboard boxed kit has pretty much all the same other than the slicks do not have pad printed whitewalls or lettering, only comes with the clear glass and no extra chrome tree. The difference in price? Well, that's going to depend on where you find yours. The going rate seems to be around $36.99 for the Tin version and the cardboard is not released just yet. I prefer the tin version since all the goodies is one of the best things they have done to this kit.
With all this being said, this kit has been on a lot of modeler's minds while waiting for the release. This sparked a build off on "Traditional Rod and Kustom in scale" forum. (yes vintage drag models are more than welcome!)
I am building the "BluePrinter" version which I believe to be the last time it was released back more than 10 years ago. The first releases were molded in red with chrome trees and the BluePrinter was molded in light gray. I think the new tin and cardboard versions are in white.

Much respect for the old school when it comes to Hot Rods AND to Model Kits! They just don't put very many cool model kits these days. It's a shame, just look at this Vintage restored T by Ron S.! It's a clear indication that people would buy these in the original design if they were offered up!

I am working on this right now, everything else is aside until I feel like messing with them again. (what else is new?)(as if I need another project)
This is the OriGinal kit Revell did with the opening doors and posable steering etc...They brought it back out not that long ago as a "Rat Rod" kit. BLEH! Looks like some Hot Rods on the cover to me! Anyways, I am going to build it just like the box cover shows it...why not right? It's molded in red, so it's gonna be easy to match :-p I will just polish the plastic to a high shine.

Another mild ride from my bench! I have little to do before this is finished. This is a curbside kit with no engine. The whitewalls are original Firestones from the old kits in the 1960's and the rims...can't tell ya where they came from but they are sort of like Radir mags but have reversed spoke features. I will be adding spinners to the mags.

I know this was created after the Monogram Kit "Blue Beetle" '29 Model A pickup, but to see something in 1:1 scale like this is REALLY cool! I don't know who took the photos I have accumulated, but thank you! I hope to find more and better photos soon. Almost every detail of the model kit was included on this truck. The owner is Otis Eldridge from up in New Jersey area. The photos came from LEAD EAST in 2005. I have never seen other photos from any other shows. Rod & Custom should do an article on this!

This is being built with a Monogram later issue Early Iron kit and some of the original parts I scavenged. The scuba stuff was a gift from a friend on TRaK and was made by Replicas and Miniatures. Thanks to Ron Roberts, I have finally received NICE scans of the box art I needed! I plan to build a replica of the artwork "GAS MAN". I really enjoy bringing the artwork to life as most kids never built them this way or they tried and the work was not very nice PLUS age and abuse of the builds over the years. So it is great pleasure to make them FRESH and best I can without spending countless hours. I didn't realize until today when I got the scans, that there was two kits with the GAS MAN on the side panel. Both images are from two issues of the kit. The 49'ER was kit number 2249-170 (the 170 was actual price) and the other is from the Tijuana Border Patrol kit.

Here it is finally done! I restored/rebuilt this car and did some very mild touches. I shaved the scripts and crests/badges, lowered it a bit, changed the wheelbase so it looked better, fixed windsheild frame because it was busted in the middle and the photo can speak for the rest.

The one photo that sticks to mind is he had his whole driveway leading into the garage covered in cars in 1/25-1/25 scale unboxed, and built like on the shelves.

For those collectors information....This is being built from a fresh kit. Build them while you are alive, because when you are gone....what are they worth?

Seth was a good guy. He was too young to go. They say the best go home first. He was one of the best. I only knew him through my brother Scott, because they went to school together. I also knew him because he worked at a bike shop that I would frequent towards the end of my bike building. Seth was very polite and funny, everyone who had a chance to know him, loved him.
Seth had tumors removed more than once from his brain. The last time didn't go well. He will be missed. Rest In Peace. My condolences to his wife and family.

A few months back a good friend of mine Randy Webster invited me over to his house. We looked at his models and he had this on his shelf. I was looking for one in a big way at the time. I commented on it and he said "pshh yeah I bought that at a yard sale for like a quarter"...I said "NO SHIT?"...He said yeah and when he could tell I had been wanting one....he said "you can have it if you want, it's not my style"...I didn't argue!
Well it's time to get this thing on the bench! It's swimming in the purple lake now. The WHOLE thing practically fell apart! The only thing glue was the roll bar and it came out easy....everyhing else was "put together" with NO glue! Man what a NICE gift! AMT '60 Mercury Parklane....not issued since 1960!

I was taken by surprise when I checked my email today. I found that my model had been chosen for the home page honors on a yahoo group I belong to. I got a laugh out of the photo and it was neat to see! Model Cars Unlimited is a nice family oriented group on yahoo. The first time I ever got the honor was about 5 years ago and it was on the same group. Thanks to the beautiful photography and the beautiful work on this '54 Ford! WOW! I have to try and build this car someday. It has a '66 Impala roof, but I will find a '65 easier I think.

Thinking of a friend

Many modelers have seen his creations and heard his name. Not that many actually know him on a personal level, to claim him as a friend. I have known Bruce Owen since 2004 and he is a member of my club. Bruce spent many nights in our club chat room, answering questions, laughing, sharing photos and being a personable guy just like the rest of us. He is a human being and has a heart.
Bruce has been diagnosed with MS (Multiple Sclerosis). Bruce went to the doctor complaining of a pain in his arm and to find out he has a disease? Almost immediately after diagnosis Bruce was becoming bed ridden and using a walker to get around. That's how "dangerous" it is.
Very recently Bruce was admitted into a hospital for a blood clot, but is expected to be fine. This is not the end of the road as far as "danger" is concerned.
I want everyone to know he is not afraid and said he accepts the will of God.
I just wanted everyone to think of him and maybe it will help him through this. Here is a video to watch about MS.

Building a model from Art

This Jairus Watson art inspired me to build it in scale. I am using the AMT 1957 Ford Thunderbird T392 (older kit molded in black). Needless to say, in order to accomplish this task there will be some scratch building, modifying, kit bashing and after market parts involved.

I finally got done with this today. I tell ya what..this is a really nice body, but it's kinda "fun" putting it together with the AMT kit. The thing is...it's not gonna sit this low without some work, so you have been warned. Painted Oriental Kandy Blue, Modelhaus shoes.

I have not seen another one built, let alone as a Mild Kustom since I did mine. Steve Hinson built the "Spanish Fly" and mine is the Kandy Green one. We have met in person, I hope next time we can get photos of them together. His is really slick, the base is so cool too!

Watson style '59 Skyliner

I am just about speechless. I can't say how cool I think this model is! Renaud "ZED" Legardez painted this car twice and the 2nd time around could not be better! He started with one of the Revell "multi peice" body kits. To begin with, these kits were crude but he made them look beautiful!

And all the sudden out of nowhere comes something that is no longer BLAH! Renaud (ZED) Legardez , member of Traditional Rod and Kustom in scale and a Gold Member of the Drastic Plastics Model Car Club is working on this sweet Watson style '59 Skyliner. I about jumped out of my skin when I saw photos of this posted on TRaK! In fact, this paint job/project has me motivated to try the same on a '60 Buick I am building.
This is not the first time I have seen this done on a model car/ 1/25 scale....but the pattern and colors REALLY did it for me!

Building box art models has been fun and I have a lot to build yet. For some reason I seem to draw more inspiration from artwork than I do from photos of real vehicles. Lyle Willits has also been bitten by the bug, at least awhile ago since these are new photos of an old build of his. He built his '41 Chevy pickup to look like a Jairus Watson piece. I really like the truck even if he had never shown the artwork with it. On TRaK I have a build going for modeling artwork in plastic. I have a feeling it's going to bring some really neat builds out!

Pssst..reissue this kit , it's gonna sell trust that! Red version I had and sold ,it's an original build. Blue one is an in progress that I will finish eventually. EDIT: I was not thinking clearly.....the car was ruined to make a dirt track racer. BIG MISTAKE! Kinda like the ruined '66 Buick Skylark!
